Do cloth diapers feel wet?

My son in a lalabye baby pocket diaper, in my new favorite print (I really love shark prints 🙂 )

Everyone wants their baby to comfortable, so it makes sense that some people would be really uncomfortable with the idea that their baby felt wet all the time.

There are some cloth diapers that do feel wet after baby pees in them, prefolds, flats and most fitteds, just by themselves, because they are natural fibers will feel wet.

Do all cloth diapers feel wet?

The answer to this question is “no”, it is not true that all cloth diapers feel wet, it is also untrue that all disposables feel dry.

There all many cloth diapers that have a stay-dry layer so that they will feel dry against baby’s skin.

However, in my experience if a cloth diaper is completely soaked, some of the moisture seems to seep back through.

But cloth diapers are meant to be changed before they become completely soaked to prevent leaking anyway, so this really shouldn’t happen.

Some cloth diapers, where the insides are totally made from natural fibers are in fact going to feel wet once baby pees in them.

Since natural fibers like cotton, hemp and bamboo are absorbent, if they are placed right against baby’s skin then they are also holding pee right against baby’s skin.

Which isn’t really a problem unless your baby has a wetness sensitivity or if you are leaving the baby in the wet diaper for a long period of time.

Which cloth diapers feel dry?

Most of the time cloth diapers will say whether or not they are stay-dry.

The vast majority of pocket diapers have a microfleece/ micro suede/ athletic wicking jersey lining inside that makes the cloth diaper stay-dry.

If you come across a pocket cloth diaper that says it’s a ” natural” pocket diaper that it may have a cotton or bamboo lining that will not be stay-dry.

A few all-in-ones are also stay-dry, like the Thirsties natural stay-dry all-in-one which is an all-in-one I personally have 5-6 of and love them.

The absorbency is hemp/cotton but it has a stay-dry layer sewn onto the top insert.

So, while it is a natural fiber cloth diaper it is also stay-dry.

Most of the time if an all-in-one is made with natural fibers, it is not stay-dry so always make sure to double check the description of the cloth diaper before buying if stay-dry is important to you.

How to make any cloth diaper feel dry

If you have a natural fiber cloth diaper like a Thirsties natural pocket diaper or all-in-one but you really don’t like the idea of your baby being able to feel wet, you can break out the stay-dry liners.

Stay-dry liners are awesome, you can buy them from most cloth diaper shops or you can make your own by just buying either some microfleece from a craft store or just getting a fleece blanket from Walmart.

You can then take any cloth diaper and make it stay-dry by just laying a stay-dry liner in it.

I personally made all of my stay-dry liners, I have one larger set for my one-size cloth diapers and a smaller set for my newborn cloth diapers.

Each of my DIY stay-dry liners probably only cost me less than $0.20 each and have lasted me 2-3 years.
