Best newborn cloth diapers: Top 3, my experience and pictures

Doing your research and buying high quality, easy to use newborn cloth diapers just makes your experience that much easier.
Newborn cloth diapers are super small and adorable, just like the tiny babies that wear them, the idea of cloth diapering a newborn can be kinda intimidating, but in reality it’s probably one of the easiest stages of cloth diapering.
Smart bottoms born smart 2.0
The Born smart 2.0 fits super small, they have waist, leg and rise snaps so they are very adjustable, they are also made of a hemp/ cotton blend so they’re very absorbent.

The smart bottoms born smart 2.0 has an umbilical cut-out
The smartbottoms born smart 2.0 is an awesome newborn cloth diaper, it has an umbilical cut-out and 3 different rise settings so fitting under the umbilical cord shouldn’t be a problem.

The interior of the smart bottoms born smart 2.0
The interior of the born smart 2.0 has one 55% hemp/ 45% Organic cotton insert that is sewn into the back of the diaper.
The interior is also “No-prep” meaning unlike many other natural fiber cloth diapers they don’t need prewashed several times to “prep” the fibers so they absorb correctly.

The smart bottoms born smart 2.0 is not stay-dry so if you are uncomfortable with your baby feeling wet you can use a stay-dry liner.
Stay-dry liners also help with meconium ( baby’s first poo) stains, I’ve personly never had a problem with meconium staining but I have heard that some people do have problems with it.
Price of the smart bottoms born smart 2.0
Smart bottoms born smart 2.0s are $19.95 each making a stash of 24 cost $478.80 before taxes and shipping.
If you are comfortable with it, buying used is a great option, I purchased 4 of my smart bottoms born smart 2.0s on a cloth diaper buy, sell , trade site on facebook.
Fit of the smart bottoms born smart 2.0
Smart bottoms born smart 2.0s fit great on tiny babies, their website says they fit babies 6-16 pounds.
Now while I totally believe they would fit a 6lb baby both my boys were out growing and out peeing them at about 10-11 pounds.
So it’s very possible that the smart bottoms born smart 2.0 could fit a 16lb baby, and if they were light wetters the born smart 2.0 would most likely work just fine.
The born smart 2.0 also has rolled leg elastics which are gentle on little legs but still contain the epic explosions of newborn poo.
I have 5 smart bottoms born smart 2.0s in my newborn cloth diaper stash, both of my sons wore smart bottoms born smart 2.0s as there first diapers right after they were born.
Blueberry newborn simplex
The Blueberry newborn simplex is one of the bigger newborn cloth diapers but it is also one of the longest lasting and most absorbent

The Blueberry newborn simplex has an umbilical snap-down
The Blueberry newborn simplex uses one of the more common methods to avoid the umbilical cord which is the umbilical snap-down.
While the umbilical snap-down does it’s job really well it does often leave some of the inner fabric of the diaper exposed which could cause pee to wick onto
baby’s clothes, I have never had a problem with wicking caused by an umbilical snap down but I have heard some people have had issues with it.

The interior of the Blueberry newborn simplex
The interior of the Blueberry newborn simplex has a pretty unique design,
The Blueberry newborn simplex has 1 insert sewn into the front of the diaper that can either be placed on top or stuffed into the pocket.
The Blueberry newborn simplex is made of 100% organic cotton.
Cotton is usually near the bottom of the absorbency scale but the Blueberry newborn simplex is known to be one of the most absorbent newborn cloth diapers.
Cotton is also not stay-dry so this is another cloth diaper where stay-dry liners could come in handy.

Fit of the Blueberry newborn simplex
The blueberry newborn simplex is one of the larger newborn cloth diapers.
While Blueberry’s website says the newborn simplex fits from 6-16lbs I really don’t know how well it would fit on a 6lb baby.
The Blueberry newborn simplex also has rolled leg elastics, however they don’t get as tight as some other newborn cloth diapers,
So they would probably work best on a baby with chunkier legs.
Blueberry newborn simplex do have an umbilical snap-down but they do not have any rise snaps
So there is the possibility that the umbilical snap-down just can’t get the diaper low enough to not touch the umbilical cord.
Price of the Blueberry newborn simplex
The Blueberry newborn simplex is $21.95 each making a stash of 24 $526.80 before taxes and shipping.
Blueberry has been known to have some quality control issues, but I’ve never experienced anything but a few stray threads here and there.
This is also a great diaper to purchased used if you are comfortable with doing so.
Thirsties natural newborn all-in-one
The Thirsties natural newborn all-in-one fits very small yet lasts a very long time, Thirsties prints are also very gender neutral yet adorable.

The Thirsties natural newborn all-in-one has an umbilical snap-down
The thirsties natural newborn all-in-one has an umbilical snap-down along with having a 2 step rise so this cloth diaper can pretty easily avoid the umbilical cord.

The interior of the Thirsties natural newborn all-in-one
The Thirsties natural newborn all-in-one’s interior is made of a 55% hemp/ 45% organic cotton blend making it very absorbent.

The Thirsties natural newborn all-in-one has 2 inserts sewn into the front of the diaper which allows the diaper to dry faster
Since the absorbency is split into 2 thinner inserts as apposed to 1 really thick insert.
The thirsties natural newborn all-in-one is not stay- dry on it’s own so you may want to use a stay-dry liner.
Fit of the Thirsties natural newborn all-in-one
The Thirsties website says the Thirsties natural newborn all-in-one fits babies from 5-14lbs which I feel is pretty accurate
however I personally think they would be out peeing it before they got to 14lbs.
The Thirsties natural newborn all-in-one is the only newborn cloth diaper on this list that has a hook and loop/ Velcro option,
Which makes getting a really good fit super easy, especially for those who are not used to cloth diapers.
The snap version of the Thirsties natural newborn all-in-one has only 1 snap on each wing that adjusts both the waist and the legs which can also eliminate some of the confusion for users with less experience.
Unlike the smart bottoms born smart 2.0 and the Blueberry newborn simplex the Thirsties natural newborn all-in-one has encased elastics
which can get kinda tight on chubby little legs however I’ve never heard of that causing an actual problem.
Price of the thirsties natural newborn all-in-one
The Thirsties natural newborn all-in-one is $19.50 each making a stash of 24 $487.50 before taxes and shipping.
Thirsties does have a smaller website called “Thirsties outlet” where they sell seconds quality cloth diapers,
These are cloth diapers with small imperfections that can’t be sold at full price.
The downside to the Thirsties outlet is they don’t always have what you want in stock since it’s only on the Thirsties outlet if the diaper came from a bad batch.
In conclusion
These newborn cloth diapers are my top 3 because they have served me well through 2 newborns, even though my sons had different body types
My 1st son being shorter and chunkier and my 2nd son being taller and slimmer these same 3 newborn cloth diapers were always our go-to.
